Carbon steel for quenching and tempering

This group includes construction steels intended for treatment (hardening followed by tempering around 600 ° C). In general, tempering steels are used for the construction of mechanical parts subjected to static and dynamic loads: they are widely used in the mechanical industries, for shafts of any type, driveshafts, rods, connecting rods, connecting parts, levers, rods for hammers and columns presses.

Case-hardening steel

This group includes construction steels, with carbon <0.30%, intended for the cementation treatment which consists of a carbon enrichment and subsequent hardening which gives the piece high hardness with excellent resistance to wear. The low carbon content of the core allows high values of toughness in the underlying mass.

Surface hardening steels

They are hot rolled products, in bars and rolls of unalloyed and alloyed steel. The UNI 7847 standard provides the C, Cr, Cr-Mn, Cr-Mo and Ni-Cr-Mo types. Where rough handlings are not expected, we will find carbon steels with normalization heat treatment or, in other cases, alloyed steels with hardening and tempering treatment.

Free-cutting steels

The significant increase in machining costs has re-evaluated the importance of the technological characteristics of steel workability. To achieve greater automation and cost competitiveness, more and more often we are focusing on the steels series commonly referred to as automatic (S minimum 0.10%). The special leaded steels differ from normal construction and case hardening steels due to the presence of Pb quantity around 0.15 ÷ 0.35%, to improve their machinability.

Stainless steels

These are steels with a high percentage of chromium (sometimes with the presence of other alloying elements) developed to counter the various forms of corrosion. Dry corrosion (often called high-temperature corrosion or oxidation) is usually distinguished from wet corrosion that occurs in liquid environments (or when metal becomes covered with liquid condensate). In general, it can be said that the resistance to hot corrosion of stainless steels is linked to the formation, and subsequent maintenance in place, of a compact and adherent layer of protective oxide which prevents the further attack of the material.

Spring steels

This group includes structural steel grades intended for the manufacture of coil springs, stabilizer bars, spring clips, etc. Spring steels are hardened and tempered at temperatures around 450 ° C. The state of supply can be natural or, preferably, annealed.

Nitriding steels

These are steels from Carbon = 0.30%/0.40% containing alloying elements such as Al, Cr, Mo and V, capable of forming particularly hard nitrides; are intended for the construction of mechanical parts which, once they are subjected to heat treatment of nitriding, harden by nitrogen absorption, then put directly into operation without other processes except one of the active and polishing). The core retains the characteristic strength and toughness qualities of steel while the hardnesses obtainable are very high (750/1200 HV), such as to ensure resistance to wear and seizure far superior to that of case-hardened and tempered steels.

Hot work tool steels

This group includes tool steels intended for setting up equipment in which the operating conditions are such as to allow the tool to work at temperatures between 450 ° C – 600 ° C not continuously, such as for example, the creation of molds for die-casting of light alloys, liners, mandrels and other details for extrusion presses, hot shear blades, equipment for the production of bolts. In this family, we find the brands 2714, 2365, 2343 and 2344.

Cold work tool steels

This group includes tool steels intended for the preparation of equipment in which the conditions of use can maintain operating temperatures below 200 ° C. In this family we find, for example, the brand 2080: a steel that has high wear resistance and moderate dimensional stability during heat treatment, mainly used for the creation of cold rolling mill cylinders for strips, shear blades, punches and dies, rollers etc.

Heat-resistant steels

This group includes the types of construction steels intended for the preparation of parts subject to the phenomenon of creep, due to the combined action of temperature – stress – time. These steels are intended for thermal plants such as thermoelectric plants, oil plants, etc., in any case for parts that do not work in environments with a particular corrosive or oxidizing action. The steels of this group can be supplied in the normalized, annealed, machinable annealed and tempered state.
